Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20th, 1964) was an American lawyer, politician, and the current vice president of the United States. She is the first vice president to be female and the highest-ranking female politician in U.S. history, as also the first African American and first Asian American vice president. As a member of the Democratic Party, she has been attorney general for California between 2011 and 2017, and also as an United States senator representing California from 2011 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland and graduated from Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After establishing her career as an Alameda County District Attorney Harris was hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Later she became the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003, she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. She was elected Attorney general of California in 2010. In 2014, she was re-elected. Harris was the United States junior senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the 2nd African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for health reform, federal descholaring of cannabis, a pathway for immigrants who are not legal citizens as well as the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also backed progressive tax reform. Her pointed questioning of Trump officials during Senate hearings has garnered the attention of the nation, including the second Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, who was charged with sexual assault.
